This body of work was inspired by my traveling experiences in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. As symbolized by the rise of the towering landmark Burj Khalifa, Dubai ascended from the desert during its transformation into the global hub that it is today. This series of images is meant to document the process and fruition of said transformation.
The strong colors that everyday objects in Dubai possess compelled me to avail myself of digital photography in order to capture the vividness of the subject matter seen in these photographs. Not only is the locale of Dubai harbored by deserts, but it is embraced by the ocean as well. Such geographical features dictate that Dubai will be dominated by various strong color schemes to go along with the contrasting sceneries. This series of work aims to investigate the variating hues as well. Colors are not the only changing factor across these sceneries. The relationship between human and nature can be also seen constantly altering through these images. Rather than being dwarfed by the dominating hues of the landscape, the man-made colors negotiate their way into nature.
Hence, it is the goal of this body of work to demonstrate the theme of assimilation Dubai has succeeded in. The fast pace by which it rose has gifted travelers artifacts of the way of living before, during and after such a transformation. Such evidence, as seen in this series, highlights human being’s efforts in communicating with nature and is symbolized through the interactions of the aforementioned various colors.
